A brush fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon burned about 8 acres and forced one lane of Kawaihae Road to be closed for several hours, the Hawaii County Fire Department reports.
Responding to the 3:06 p.m. alarm, firefighters arrived between mile markers 64 and 65 to find 5 acres had already been consumed by the blaze, which was being fanned by 10 to 15 mph west winds. The fire was located in vacant grassland on the Waikoloa side of the road.
The fire was declared under control shortly after 4 p.m. and firefighters were to spend the night monitoring the fire for hot spots and flareups, according to the department. The cause of the brush fire has not yet been determined.
No injuries were reported.
